Online DSGL Tool

What is the Online DSGL Tool?

Defence Export Controls (DEC) has developed this self-assessment Tool to assist you to establish whether or not you will require a permit from DEC to export, supply, publish or broker controlled goods, software or technology.  A permit from DEC is only required when an export, supply, brokering or publishing activity is controlled and the goods, software or technology are listed in the DSGL. The export, supply, brokering or publishing of goods, software or technology that are not listed in the DSGL does not require a permit from DEC. Conversely, if the goods, software or technology are listed in the DSGL but your export, supply, brokering or publishing activity is not controlled, you will also not require a permit from DEC.

Use the Activity Questionnaire to determine if your export, supply, brokering or publishing activity is controlled, and the DSGL Search to determine if your goods, software or technology are listed in the DSGL.

If you are still not sure whether you require a permit after using the Tool, you will need to submit an application to DEC for assessment. Application forms can be downloaded from www.defence.gov.au/ExportControls/forms.asp.

The Tool has two parts:

  • The Activity Questionnaire is a self-assessment tool that will assist you to determine if your export, supply, publication or brokering activity is controlled. You will be able to save and print a copy of the questions and answers from your session.
  • The DSGL Search is a tool with advanced search features that will assist you to determine if your goods, software or technology are listed in the 2015 Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL). You will be able to save and print your search terms and the control list items that match your search. You also have the option of browsing the entire DSGL.

We recommend that if you are new to export controls and are unsure if your activity will be controlled, you should complete the Activity Questionnaire first.

Results from the Activity Questionnaire and the DSGL Search can be saved or printed for your records. These results should be attached to any application that is subsequently submitted to DEC.
